Environmental Health

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, defines environmental health as follows: "Environmental health comprises those aspects of human health, including quality of life, that are determined by physical, chemical, biological, social, and psychosocial factors in the natural environment. It also refers to the theory and practice of assessing, correcting, controlling, and preventing those factors in the environment that can potentially affect adversely the health of present and future generations.

Nutrition, soil contamination, water pollution, air pollution, safe drinking water, noise pollution, light pollution, waste control, and public health are integral aspects of environmental health." The Douglas County Health Department's environmental sector is actively involved in the environmental health of our community.

Services provided are: food inspections, lodging inspections, temporary food stand inspections, summer food program, daycare inspections, and the always popular food safety classes. Education is a part of every inspection and the health inspector works with the service providers to provide a healthy environment for all residents and visitors.

Water sampling kits from the Department of Health and Senior Services State Public Health Laboratory are available at the Health Department for individuals interested in bacteriological analysis of their water. Residents can pick up a kit at the DCHD reception desk and return the sample by 10:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday for best results. The Missouri Department of Health and Human Services will send results directly to the resident for a $10 fee.

Specific complaints reported to the Health Department are investigated on a case by case basis or referred to other agencies as appropriate.
