Health Screenings
- Lead: Due to the number of older homes and buildings in the county, lead testing is provided to children
ages one to five.
- Cholesterol: As funding is available cholesterol screenings are offered to residents at no charge. A
screening includes triglycerides, LDL, HDL, glucose, and ratio. Health educators are available to review results
with participants and to provide education about how positive lifestyle choices can impact results.
- Blood Pressure & Blood Sugar: Blood pressure screenings are available in the lobby during business hours.
On the first Wednesday of each month a staff member goes to the Red Bud Senior Housing Community Room to provide
blood pressure and blood sugar screenings. On the first and third Wednesday staff goes to the Ava Community Center
to provide blood pressure and blood sugar screenings.
- Body Mass Index/Weight: BMI screenings are available in health education during regular office hours if
the equipment is not being utilized outside the building. The Tanita 2000 is taken to various public events to
provide both screening and education. A certified scale is available in the lab area and can be used by the public
when not being used for a clinic. Through a grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health software was purchased to
track screening information for Ava Elementary students. This data will be used by school staff to identify risk
factors.
- Tuberculosis: TB testing is done on Mondays and Tuesdays with results read on Thursdays and Fridays.
No appointment necessary.
- Public Health Clinic: For many years there were few options for Douglas County residents needing blood
drawn, a vitamin shot, daily dressing changes or foot/toenail care. As more physicians have opened offices in the
Ava community, we are no longer accepting new patients.
